Brief author info: Malcolm X (1925-1965) American civil rights activist (Malcolm Little; El-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz) Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of a Baptist minister; in early years, was arrested for burglary; in prison, converted to Islam of the Nation of Islam sect. Upon release, took the name Malcolm X and promoted Nation of Islam and black nationalist causes; initially opposed to integration. Views changed after the hijira (pilgrimage to Mecca), where he wTas struck by ideas of Islamic brotherhood. In 1964, founded Organization of Afro-American Unity; which promoted many orthodox Muslim beliefs, along with antiracism and anticolonialism. Wrote The Autobiography of Malcolm X with Alex Haley. Assassinated in New York; influence increased after his death.
