Born in Karachi; worked as lawyer in Bombay; elected to Viceroy's legislative council; member of Indian National Congress. Became prime mover in India's All Muslim League; opposed Gandhi's policy of nonviolence and resigned from Congress. At London Round Table Conference (1931), advocated "fourteen points" safeguarding Muslim minorities; eventually advocated separate state for Muslims. Upon creation of Pakistan, became first governor general; called "Quaid-i-Azam" (Great Leader).
