Picture making is a mixture of creation and craft. The artist goes to his work under the stimulus of some excitement which has been filtered through his own temperament. His temperament, of course, has been itself conditioned by the period in which he lives, the culture and taste with which he is surrounded, the purpose which his art will serve, and the technical means available for him to express himself.
